Proof of how I made Double Page Spead

This is the proof of how I made my double page spread.
All the print screens taken are of my use of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. The first one is how I initially planned for my double page spread to turn out. I really was not satisfied with that outcome so I decided to make the picture black and white. I began to like the image however the form of black and white I wanted for that picture was not available. I ended up putting the picture under gray scale which was an IMPROVEMENT from the initial photo, but not quite what I wanted; I had no choice so I stuck with it. Then I covered the white areas with black to blend with the background of the double page spread and I drew on an elbow. I rotated some of the small pictures on the right side to adopt a more playful feel to the magazine. Then I added the interview and some text in between the arm as my research had this and the last one is my final product.

3rd Photoshoot

I am more SATISFIED with the third photo shoot as I became more familiar with what was required of me and what was required of the model as this is the second time I worked with a male I found it hard at first to get the model to take the job seriously. In addition I had to precisely inform my model on what to wear to suit the feel of my magazine. I showed him pictures of what I wanted him to wear and how he should pose. This made the shoot a lot quicker and easier as all the research into PRECISELY how I wanted things to turn out. We chose a location where there was a lot of grass to create a more serene natural feel to the picture however the background disrupted my plans. therefore we went to the pier and fortunately it was a sunny day so I was able to capture more blissful pictures. It was hard to find research of what I wanted so instead I researched similar images to the way I wanted my pictures to come out and made my model mimic the poses in the photos.

Detailed Research for Double Page Spread

This first image is what I am planning my double page spread to look like. I really like this image, as it is from the same magazine as my front cover so there is synergy and this will help me adopt the same effect. The dark background created is what I really like as the model is pale and therefore her COMPLEXION and facial features are enhanced by the dark background. The contrast of the writing to the background works well as the text is easy to read. The only thing in colour is the image of the model and her title ‘MADONNA LOOKS BACK’.
The second double page spread is a continuation of the first one as it is a special edition it has incorporated how the front cover of ‘Rolling Stone’ is black and white and made all the pictures on the right black and white. This is another option that I would really like to adopt as it is not just one picture so it is not boring. There is however one picture that is landscape and takes up half of the page. This allows the other pictures to stand out as the editor has made the other pictures darker and lighter to CONTRAST the main image on that page. Also there is a pink box that breaks the black and white so that the image is not so boring. This pink is also on the left page with the interview and the first picture which creates a constant feel to the magazine. The writing on the left side is in three columns, as my interview will not be over the course of three double pages I will not need columns for my interview.

This is the last edition of the Madonna issue and I like this double page spread however not as much as the other ones. As it is not an introductory double page spread, the layout is different and it is not as STRIKING as the dark background against the writing. However the picture on the right is very striking as it appears to be Madonna in concert with a musical instrument being very flexible. Both the pictures on this double page spread are in colour. I will adopt both on my double page spread but on separate pages. The title links to the issue is reinforced again with the picture of her with her children to highlight a particular point in her life. Lastly the colour scheme has been consistent throughout which I will definitely employ in my music magazine.

Specific Research for Double Page Spread

This is one of the double page spreads I would like to use as a template in the CONSTRUCTION of my double page spread. I like this because of the image in the right side of Beyoncé. I will not be precisely adopting the pose but I would like do something similar to allow the picture to come out and still look like a music magazine. The colour scheme is very girly in my opinion as there is a lot of pink on the page. However this may be because the ‘Smash Hits Magazine’ logo has a pink outline so it could be a form of synergy. If this is the case then I will choose an appropriate colour for the double page spread that will link with the colour scheme of the magazine or perhaps the colours in the pictures. I will also be using the format on the left side where the headings are the same colour as the surrounding objects in the magazine. Lastly there is an insert that is not part of the interview where the magazine is giving consumers a chance to win something. This fits the magazine well however I do not think that I will be using it for my magazine as it will make the page seem too busy.
This is the other double page spread that I really thought stood out and could appeal with my double page spread. Firstly the thing that stands out the most is the picture of the model. My model looks similar to this model and therefore I will attempt to create my design in a similar way. Furthermore the background is dark and her hair blends into the background to focus on her complexion which is the STYLE I am hoping to achieve with my product. The second thing I really like is how her name takes approximately 1/3 of the page. The colour of the font suits the top and cloth the model is holding onto but still manages to stand out.  In addition the couple of paragraphs at the side work well against the background. However if it was my music magazine I would possibly have to construct two more columns to fill up the gap that is there as it may look rather odd. To conclude I still really like this double page spread as the layout and the photo have a very interesting look to the magazine that will make you want to read on.

General Research for Double Page Spread

These are the images I would like to use for the double page spread of my music magazine as they are rather feminine and elegant to an extent. As I will be using a female for the main issue in my music magazine I have ensured that my research and the pictures are mainly feminine as there are certain aspects such as the colour, fonts and even the way the model is positioned which will help me with my photo shoot for the music magazine.

How I Made My Contents Page

I originally started with the first picture for my contents as the picture has the guitar involved and I edited so it looks good enough for the whole screen. Then I found it tough to find research of previous music magazine contents page, so I decided to change my layout of the contents page to be safe as I found research that matched what I was aiming for. However when I showed my teacher he felt that the picture blown over the whole page appeared more like a music magazine but I would still need to find research that went with the layout I was aiming for. So finally I decided to go with my original design layout for my contents page. I have also used SYNERGY with the same font as the title and used reinforce the similar feel on the contents page. I will possibly be doing the same thing for the double page spread.

Second Photoshoot

My second set of photos is supposed to bring more life into my magazine as my front page is black and white. In addition, this photo is of a different model who is male unlike my previous model which APPEALS to both men and women that would read my magazine. I like these photos however they do not blend as smoothly as I planned with the front cover, so I may be having another photo shoot. In the next photo shoot I will be changing his clothing and hopefully put a musical instrument there to maintain the feel of a music magazine.

Extra Photos Research for Contents Page

As the front cover of my music magazine focuses more on the model, I would like to dedicate my contents page to exploring the musical element of the magazine. By doing this I would like to involve the prop of a musical instrument preferably the guitar to evoke the musical side of the magazine. This will be used for the contents page. Here are various pictures with the guitar involved. In my photo shoot I will be incorporating these different uses of the guitar and conclude with which picture seems best for a contents page of a music magazine. I originally wanted to use a DRUM KIT. However finding one with a suitable background was very hard. In addition the guitar is usually used in both pop and jazz magazines so I decided to choose the guitar. I also decided to use a different model and gender from the front cover to appeal to both male and female buyers.
